The first issues of Oceanological Research (1959) were devoted to the results of the International Geophysical Year. All subsequent issues of the journal were, as a rule, devoted to the results of research on international projects. The issues of "Journal of Oceanological Research" ended in 1993 with the last 44th volume.

In 2017, the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of RAS decided to publish its own electronic journal. In agreement with the National Geophysical Committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it was decided to continue the issues of Oceanological Research, that is, to publish a new journal, continuing a series of early publications. The first issue of volume 45 was published in December 2017, over the next 3 years another 12 issues of the magazine were published.
