The All-Russian Lecture Series of the Russian Science Foundation was held at the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences

On October 22, 2025, a popular science lecture entitled "Water Dynamics and Stock Dynamics: What Links Tides and Pollock Populations?" was held at the St. Petersburg Branch of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences as part of the All-Russian Lecture Series of the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) with the support of the Council of Young Scientists of the St. Petersburg Branch of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The event brought together 15 participants, most of whom were oceanology students.

Alexey Zimin, Chief Researcher at the Laboratory of Geophysical Boundary Layers, presented the results of recent studies on submesoscale and tidal dynamics in the coastal zone of Kamchatka. He detailed how local hydrodynamic processes influence the development of juvenile pollock, highlighting the factors that facilitate their growth and those that pose threats to their survival.

Dmitry Anatolyevich Romanenkov, Head of the Laboratory of Numerical Experiments on Ocean Dynamics, highlighted the scientific work of the St. Petersburg branch of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, demonstrating the range of current research.

At the end of the lecture, the participants took a tour of the branch, including the Laboratory and Testing Complex. They were introduced to various types of laboratory tanks and learned about their operating procedures, which was a useful addition to the theoretical part and provided a clear understanding of modern methods for studying oceanological processes.
