On November 17, 2025, in the lead-up to Higher Education Teachers' Day, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science held a ceremony presenting state awards of the Russian Federation and awards from the President of Russia.

By decree of the President of the Russian Federation, Valery Veniaminovich Kovalenko, a leading researcher at Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was awarded the medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland," 2nd class, for his achievements in scientific work and many years of conscientious work.
