Our Institute is the oldest and largest Russian research institution dealing with Oceanology in the Russian Federation.
The subject of the Institute is the implementation of fundamental scientific research and the introduction of applied developments in the field of Oceanology, carrying out practical survey and marine works related to the development of the World ocean.
The Institute has branches in: Kaliningrad, Gelendzhik, St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Astrakhan and Vladivostok. The geographical location of the branches allows simultaneous and rapid research in the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Arctic ocean, the Baltic, Caspian and Black seas.
The Institute manages research fleet, which includes 5 medium and large vessels (RV "Akademik Ioffe", RV "Professor Shtokman", "Akademik Sergei Vavilov", "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh", "Akademik Nikolai Strakhov") and a small fleet. Currently, the Institute is expanding the formats of cooperation with companies and organizations interested in the implementation of joint projects for the study and development of the world ocean, conducting survey and marine work on the shelf, the study of the bottom relief, underwater flora and fauna, inspection of dangerous objects on the seabed, as well as performing rescue and underwater operations.

Directions of cooperation on the basis of complex scientific research
Scientific, informational and environmental support for the implementation of major resource projects on the shelf and in the open ocean, aimed at exploration, production and transportation of natural resources, including oil and natural gas.
Forecast estimates of changes in climate conditions, such as thickness, structure and dynamics of the ice cover along the Northern sea route and in the areas of mining in the coastal Arctic waters.
Scientifically based assessment of safety of offshore pipelines laying and use. Assessment of threats and risks associated with Maritime transport emergencies.
Comprehensive monitoring of extreme wind-wave conditions on the ocean surface, seismic activity of the seabed, catastrophic ocean level rises and cyclonic activity in the oceans.
Assessment of risks associated with underwater earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis, natural methane emissions from bottom sediments, mass development of harmful marine organisms and other natural hazards.
Research of ecology and biological productivity of the Russian marginal seas under the conditions of changing climate and implementation of large projects on extraction and transportation of natural raw materials.
The use of towed and remote-controlled underwater vehicles for the study of the bottom relief, underwater flora and fauna, inspection of dangerous objects on the seabed, as well as performing rescue and underwater operations.
Deployment of scientific and technical marine site in the open sea for monitoring of hydrophysical and ecological condition of waters on the basis of application of the modern latest scientific equipment.
Institute's place among overseas ocean research centers
Place of IO RAS among the leading European centers of World ocean research as of April 2017 data on the "total impact factor" (total RG score) of institutes provided by the ResearchGate platform - the world's most popular social network for cooperation of scientists of all scientific disciplines were used to compile the rating. The value of the" total impact factor" of the Institute consists of an assessment of the total citation of publications of its employees (more than 97%), the involvement of employees in scientific project activities and international cooperation.
