From the archives of the founders of the Institute (30-40th years)

The Institute was organized by the decision of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1946 on the basis of the Laboratory of Oceanology, which had existed since 1941. P.P. Shirshov became the first director of the Institute of Oceanology. Together with him, famous scientists L.A. Zenkevich, V.G. Bogorov, S.V. Bruevich, A.D. Dobrovolsky, P.L. Bezrukov, I.D. Papanin, V.B. Shtokman and others took an active part in the creation and formation of a new scientific center.
