Building of NWB IO RAS

September 13, 2021 20 years since the signing of the Order on the establishment of the North-West Branch of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of RAS. The department was created on the basis of the Arkhangelsk Scientific Expeditionary Station. 

At the present time, the North-West Branch of the IO RAS consists of 14 people, including two doctors of sciences and one candidate of sciences. Another employee is awaiting an order for the award of a PhD degree.

Annually, on the basis of the North-West Branch of the IO RAS, from 3 to 7 expeditions are organized, within the framework of which hydrological, hydrochemical and hydrobiological observations are carried out. The staff of the department also annually takes part in expeditions on the Institute's RV in the North Atlantic, the seas of the Arctic Ocean and the southern seas.

The department conducts studies of estuarine areas of rivers in the White and Barents Seas, studies the specifics of the functioning of marginal filters in the tidal estuaries of small rivers in the Arctic zone, develops statistical models reflecting the specifics of geochemical processes in tidal estuaries, and develops methods for multicriteria assessment of sea water areas and coastal areas.

20 years is not just passing the next milestone, it is a starting point for new achievements and an opportunity for further movement forward.
