Conference on the problems of the Caspian Sea in Baku

11 06 24 On June 3-6, 2024, the international conference “Caspian Basin in Transition” was held in Baku (Azerbaijan), organized by the Franco-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) and the International Association CASPISNET (Caspian Integrated Scientific Network).

The conference aims to present and discuss new approaches, methodologies and data in the geosciences in relation to the challenges arising from the ongoing energy transition. Particular attention was paid to the rich and dynamic Caspian Sea basin, and a variety of topics were addressed, including georesource exploration and sustainability, geohazard assessment and prevention, and environmental issues such as the resilience of natural and human systems to global change.

The conference program was divided into the following 4 topics:

  1. Research and maintenance of georesources of the Caspian Basin
  2. Assessment and prevention of geological hazards
  3. Climate change and sustainability in transition
  4. Frontiers in Geosciences

The conference program on Wednesday, June 5 included a one-day scientific geological excursion to mud volcanoes near Baku. On the same day, another part of the conference participants was invited to the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA), where the CASPISNET working group was held, consisting of three sessions: (1) Social and environmental networks for sustainable and green cities; (2) Sustainable environmental data for sustainable cities; (3) Bridging the gap between science, policy and civic action for sustainable development.

About 100 people from Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkey, France, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, USA, Mexico, Israel, Norway, Kazakhstan and other countries took part in the CASPISNET conference and working group. A.G. Kostyanoy, A.A. Polukhin, A.V. Kostyleva from the Institute of Oceanology of RAS, as well as part-time workers from the Geophysical Center of RAS S.A. Lebedev and A.V. Bocharov from Tver State University made oral presentations.

A.G. Kostyanoy and S.A. Lebedev were also invited to the international meeting “The 1st Caspian Blue Horizons Workshop: Synergizing Science and Business for greater Climate Resilience and Caspian Sea Sustainability on the eve of COP29”, which will be held on June 10-11, 2024 at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA) with the support of the Baku Port Administration, the Institute of Development and Diplomacy (IDD) and the public association International Dialogue on Environmental Action (IDEA).
