On October 14, 2024, the Rector of the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), Danilo Giroldo, along with a Brazilian delegation consisting of several leaders and representatives of Brazilian universities, arrived in the Russian capital, Moscow, to begin an academic and scientific mission in the country.
On October 17, at the Embassy of Brazil in Moscow, Acting Director of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Petrovich Shevchenko and Rector/President of the Federal University of Rio Grande Danilo Giroldo signed an Agreement on academic, scientific, technological and cultural cooperation for the next five-year term.
"The signing of this agreement is very strategic, as it represents a partnership between FURG and the largest oceanological research institute in Russia, allowing for an important series of academic and cultural events that will complement ongoing research and integrate databases to facilitate a better understanding of the various oceanological phenomena. It also represents a concrete step towards bringing FURG closer to the scientific and higher education activities within the BRICS framework," explained Rector Danilo Giroldo.
The Institute of Oceanology has a long history of cooperation with FURG, in particular, in September 2024, three of our employees participated in the FURG expedition to the Patos Lagoon, before that there was a joint expedition to the mouth of the Amazon and much more. In turn, the Brazilian side expressed interest during the conversation in participating in our Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.
An agreement was reached to hold a video conference in the near future with the participation of scientists from the two scientific institutions with the aim of further developing cooperation.
