Scientometric indicators of officially registered candidates for membership in the Russian Academy of Sciences

Elections to members of the Russian Academy of Sciences will be held from May 26 to May 30, 2025. For the previous elections in 2019 and 2022, the Scientific Electronic Library published special reports with bibliometric indicators of candidates for RAS members. This year, we decided not to deviate from the tradition and calculated scientometric indicators for all officially registered candidates for the actual members and corresponding members of the RAS.

The "RSCI Core" array was used as an information base for bibliometric analysis, including publications from editions presented in the international scientometric systems Web of Science and Scopus, as well as in the national scientometric index Russian Science Citation Index.

The professional achievements and results demonstrated by candidates in the form of publications in scientific journals can be analyzed using the following indicators:

  • Number of publications included in the RSCI core. The calculation takes into account only the author's publications in journals included in the RSCI core (included in the Web of Science, Scopus or RSCI databases).
  • Number of citations from publications included in the RSCI core. References to all publications of the author from publications included in the RSCI core are taken into account, including references to monographs, articles in collections, etc.
  • Hirsch index for the RSCI core. References to all publications of the author in the RSCI core from publications included in the RSCI core are taken into account.
  • Percentile by the RSCI core. To calculate the indicator, all authors in a given scientific field (in accordance with the OECD rubric) are sorted in descending order of the number of citations from the RSCI core to works published over the past 5 years. The percentile reflects the place in the resulting rating, assuming that all authors in this row are divided into 100 equal groups. The first percentile corresponds to one percent of authors with the highest indicators.

The percentile gives an idea of the current activity of the scientist in his field, while the Hirsch index reflects the merits of the scientist throughout his life. The percentile is also good because it allows for more or less correct comparison of scientists from different scientific fields. For example, you can compare the average levels in different departments of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Hirsch index is not suitable for this purpose, since it strongly depends on the citation practices in different fields of science.

The eLIBRARY.RU website has a special section for comparing bibliometric indicators of candidates in different RAS departments and scientific specialties. For each specialty, the number of vacancies and the number of candidates for these vacancies are indicated. For each candidate, you can view a full list of his publications, citations, and analyze the entire set of his bibliometric indicators. The candidate's age is also indicated for reference, since a number of vacancies have an age limit.

In addition, you can view a reference annotation about the candidate with a description of his main achievements and open a Wikipedia page dedicated to this scientist (if, of course, there is one).
