September 5, 2018 marked the 80th anniversary
of Anatoly Mikhailovich Sagalevich, Hero of the Russian Federation, Professor,
Head of the Deep Sea Manned Submersibles Laboratory
of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
For more than thirty years Anatoly Mikhailovich has been managing the work with deep sea manned submersibles (DSMS), used for ocean scientific research and underwater technical work. He performed more than 300 dives as the main pilot of the DSMS, as the commander of the submersible vehicle Mir-1 made a legendary dive at the geographical North Pole in August 2007.
Deep sea submersibles have acquired the status of unique scientific instruments that allow scientists to conduct direct observations at great depths using the latest scientific and navigation equipment. There were dozens of unique underwater expeditions. Sagalevich's team explored rare hydrothermal springs, descended to the Soviet submarine Komsomolets, Bismarck battleship, the Kursk nuclear-powered ship, plunged at the deepest point of the Lake Baikal.
Anatoly Mikhailovich Sagalevich was awarded the Order of Lenin for the creation of the DSMS Mir-1 and Mir-2, the Order of the Badge of Honor for the deep sea exploration of the Lake Baikal, the Order of Courage for special underwater operations on the Komsomolets nuclear submarine. In 2002 he was elected a member of the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences of the United States in the nomination "Science", becoming the only Russian scientist among the outstanding submariners of the world, whose name is placed in the Hall of Underwater Glory in Miami.
