Max Barash (1.04.1935-25.10.2020)

Main Researcher
DSc (Geological and Mineralogical Sciences), Professor

Paleoecology and Biostratigraphy Laboratory
Marine Geology

Geologist, DSc (Geological-Mineralogical Sciences) (1984), Professor (1989), from 1981 to 2005 – head of the Laboratory of paleoecology and biostratigraphy, 2005 chief researcher, Laboratory of paleoecology and biostratigraphy

In 1957 he graduated from the Geological faculty of Moscow state University and began working at the Institute of Oceanology, where he is currently working.

In 1964 he defended the MSU PhD thesis "the Stratigraphy of bottom sediments from the North Atlantic ocean planktonic foraminifera". In this work he for the first time in the world of science was reconstructed late Quaternary paleo-temperature of the surface water on the structure of thanatocoenoses planktonic foraminifera. For the first time in our country, he carried out the paleo-temperature analysis by the ratio of oxygen isotopes in shells of foraminifera (Barash, Gromov, 1969).

In 1984 he defended his thesis for the degree of doctor of geological-mineralogical Sciences on the topic "Quaternary paleoceanology Atlantic ocean", since 1989 – Professor, specialty "Geology of oceans and seas".
He is the founder and head of this direction of paleooceanology as paleooceanological reconstruction on paleoecological data.

For the first time in the world in 1960 years he established a statistical relations between environmental conditions and ocean distribution of the planktonic foraminifera, which allowed to solve the inverse problem is to reconstruct ecological conditions in the fossil complexes of these organisms.

He is one of the creators of "a Large cylindrical dredge", an indispensable instrument in the geological routes.

He participated in numerous oceanological expeditions in the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific oceans, in the Norwegian, Japanese, Okhotsk, Solomon and new Guinea seas on expedition vessels "Mikhail Lomonosov", "Equator" and the boats of the Institute.

He leads the working group "Stratigraphy" of the Scientific Council on problems of World ocean of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

He is the author of about 200 published scientific works, including 6 monographs and Atlas.
