Mathematician, oceanologist, doctor of physical and mathematical Sciences (2002), from 2005 - head of Laboratory of large-scale variability of hydrophysical fields.

In 1962 he graduated from the Physico-mathematical faculty of the FESU. He worked in the Pacific Department of the Institute of Oceanology (1962-1964), and from 1964 to present - in the Institute of Oceanology.

The basis of the PhD thesis "Temporal variability of some characteristics of the atmosphere over the ocean" (1969) formed the study of the generalized spectra of perturbations of atmospheric pressure, wind speed and air temperature for different latitudinal zones of the Atlantic ocean.

The main directions of further research activities related to the study of temporal and spatial variability of oceanological and meteorological characteristics in a wide range of scales, study of the interaction of the ocean and atmosphere, large-scale perturbations of the climate system.

In the 1970s and 1980s he was an active member of the experimental studies on hydrophysical polygon in different regions of the World ocean, doing mathematical and software processing and time series analysis. According to the experiment, the POLYGON-70 with his participation it was opened and described (1974) mesoscale structure in the upper 300-meter layer of the ocean.

In the expeditions of the IO RAS 1991-1993 with his participation it was discovered and studied a new type of front Intratermoclinous lenses in the zone of the Subpolar front in the North Atlantic. He took part in the preparation of the Atlas POLIMODA (1986) – the final document of a major international project.

In recent years, his attention is focused on the research of modern climate. The diagnosis of the disturbance of the climate of the Northern hemisphere in the twentieth century allow to identify three modes of variability. It is shown that the events of El ni?o in the Northern hemisphere trigger a global response, which is expressed in deformation fields of atmospheric pressure and the formation of large-scale field anomalies in surface air temperature (1996, 2000).

The results of years of research were summarized in his doctoral thesis (2002) and in the monograph "the synoptic and large-scale variability of ocean and atmosphere" (2003).

He participated in 19 major ocean expeditions of the Institute.

He has published more than 140 scientific papers.
