Academician of RAS since 1992. Specialist in the field of experimental oceanology and automation of oceanological research, author of 150 scientific works, including 7 monographs, 1 textbook, 8 copyright certificates and 17 patents for inventions.

Smirnov took part in two round the world and ten long expeditions to the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. He carried out experimental studies of internal waves in a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, created special measuring equipment and a measurement technique. Extensive material has been obtained in various regions of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. The performed theoretical analysis and its comparison with experimental data are reflected in the author's monograph "Experimental Studies of Internal Waves in the Ocean".
