Our Institute is the oldest (decree of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences of 01/31/1946) and the largest Russian research center in the field of oceanology. The IO RAS is the only institute in Russia that conducts research in all areas of marine sciences, including physics, climatology, chemistry, biology and geology of the ocean, and independently develops marine technology for research.
In 1949, the Institute received at its disposal the first research vessel "Vityaz", reequipped specifically for oceanological work, with which numerous scientific discoveries are associated. In 1987, the first submersion of the deep-sea manned submersibles Mir-1 and Mir-2 took place. The R / V Vityaz and the legendary Mirs became the symbols of the Institute. At present, the operational management of the Institute includes scientific research sea vessels of an unlimited navigation area.
Throughout its long history, the Institute has been carrying out research related to the interests of the country's national security, including such important government work as long-term monitoring of the accident zone of the Komsomolets nuclear submarine in the Norwegian Sea, detailed studies and video recordings of the sunken nuclear submarine Kursk. Together with the carrier vessel of the RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, manned submersibles Mirs form a unique research complex, which was used to study hydrothermal systems on the ocean floor (one of the largest discoveries of the 20th century).
Our Institute is famous for its traditions, which perfectly combine new scientific approaches and modern purposefulness. The high and responsible status is confirmed by numerous discoveries that have won wide popularity and appreciation of the scientific community of Russia and foreign countries, the names of many of our scientists are immortalized on the map of the World Ocean.
On the days of the glorious anniversary, I congratulate all employees of the Institute!
Please accept my sincere wishes to always remain in the forefront of world science, to maintain energy and initiative in solving a wide range of scientific and applied scientific problems, new scientific achievements and discoveries for the glory of our Fatherland.
