Publishing activity is defined by the Charter of IO RAS as one of the main types:
22.5. Publishing activities (establishment and publication of scientific and popular scientific journals on the profile of the Institute for the publication of research results of scientists of the Institute and other scientific organizations, publication of monographs, scientific and methodological materials, collections of scientific papers, materials of conferences containing the results of scientific activities).
The publishing house of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology RAS is a structural subdivision of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and since March 31, 2022 is part of the Center for Information Resources, Technologies and Publishing (IT Center).
The main task of the Publishing House is the organization and implementation of editorial and publishing activities - the preparation, publication and mass distribution of scientific papers and information about the activities of the Institute in print and electronic form, support for the publication of proceedings of conferences and schools of the IO RAS, control and clarification of information on the publication activity of IO RAS employees in information-analytical systems.
Technical support, provision of server resources and software and hardware systems for the functioning of electronic publications is carried out by departments that are part of the IT Center of the IO RAS.

The editors of the official website of the IO RAS OCEAN.RU collect information about the activities of the Institute, edit and process incoming photos, videos and text materials, their prompt publication in Russian and English on the portal, social networks and external information resources; is responsible for the current state and development of the portal sites, provides representation of the Institute in information and analytical systems built on the basis of the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) data.

The Editorial Board of the Journal of Oceanological Research carries out the selection, literary editing and design of printed and electronic publications, provides prepress preparation, develops layouts for printed publications, performs typesetting, layout and editing of manuscripts for printed and electronic publications, organizes the review of manuscripts and the entire publishing process of scientific works of the Institute, carries out the information content of the official website of the journal www.jor.ocean.ru
Since 03/23/2021, the Journal of Oceanological Research is included in the List of peer-reviewed scientific publications in which the main scientific results of dissertations for the degree of candidate of science, for the degree of doctor of science (as of 03/23/2021) should be published. The Journal is certified for 28 scientific specialties.
