Scientists from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with colleagues, studied the benthic fauna of the hydrothermal communities of the Piip underwater volcano in the southwestern part of the Bering Sea. In total, 130 species of macro- and megafauna have been discovered, of which about 25% are new to science.
